ChiSec 17 is NEXT WEDNESDAY.

Thomas Ptacek | April 24th, 2008 | Filed Under: Gatherings

ChiSec is the single best gathering of security professionals in the Chicago metro area: it’s free of charge, free of vendors, and free of membership. You just show up, and so do other people, and somehow, by the power of the long tail cluetrain infoconomy, the whole thing works itself out, as if some mysterious tipping “point”, aided by the wisdom of the crowd and the power of thinking without thinking, is propelling it towards a freakonomic logic of life that is made to stick.

Where was I? Moneyball! No, wait: the location. It’s at Houlihan’s on Wacker, which is on the corner of Wacker and Michigan. This ChiSec only: a sure-to-be-exciting discussion about why we continue to have ChiSec at a Houlihan’s. Come armed with suggestions for alternatives!

ChiSec is next Wednesday. You do not need to RSVP.

Since you guys are in Chicago, anyone supporting or going to the “con” portion of ChicagoCon?

ChiSec is curiously missing from Wikipedia’s list of hacker cons. Makes me wonder if there’s a TampaSec.

Let’s answer those one-by-one, in reverse order:

    (2) There’s a TampaSec if you want there to be one. You have no idea how easy these are to set up. Check out: http://www.citysec.org/forums/1/topics/9, and then post yours to CitySec.org.

    (1) CitySec isn’t a hacker con, for three reasons: (a) most of the people who go are security professionals, and (b) it happens every month, and (c) it’s totally informal, with no sponsorships, talks, or fees.

    (0) I’m not sure I’m sold on a con-for-it’s-own-sake in Chicago. ChicagoCon is a for-profit enterprise that promotes for-profit training for certifications I’m pretty dubious about. I have no opinions one way or the other about ChicagoCon, but I feel like I’m going to see all the people I’d care to meet at ChicagoCon at ChiSec, and I won’t have to pay to do it.
